During the summer of 2026, our family took a big road trip down the western U.S. coast. Our first stop after crossing the border was Mount Hood National Forest, and in the weeks leading up to the trip, I had been looking through some of the hiking trails and places we could explore, and had decided that at least one evening would be spent driving up to Timberline Lodge and hiking around at the alpine level of Mount Hood. It sounded like a great way to experience the mountain with the whole family.
What I hadn’t planned for was the cold.
Temperatures just an hour or so east of us were pushing 40°C, but when we arrived at Timberline Lodge around 7:00 p.m., the thermometer read just 10°C. We were definitely not dressed for that kind of temperature. We walked as a family for a little while, but it wasn’t long before the kids had had enough and wanted to head back to the car.
That’s when I found something worth photographing.
I came across a wide-angle composition with wildflowers in the foreground and Mount Hood rising in the distance. It was a beautiful scene, and I spent several minutes working through different compositions before settling on one that really spoke to me. There was one problem: the sky was completely clear, and we were only about 30 minutes from sunset. I had been hoping for some interesting clouds and light, but it didn’t look like that was going to happen.
As I was setting up the shot, though, I started noticing the wildfire smoke behind me in the distance. Fires burning elsewhere in Oregon had sent smoke into the area, and the wind had begun shifting it back toward the west. Rather than simply ruining the view, the smoke was creating beautiful layers across the distant landscape.
I had my camera pointed toward Mount Hood, but as I watched the sky, I noticed clouds beginning to develop over the distant Mount Jefferson behind me. The scene was changing quickly. I pulled the camera off the tripod, switched lenses, and turned toward Mount Jefferson. Within a short time, the clouds and smoke had come together to create this soft, layered atmosphere around the mountain. I managed to grab a few frames before the conditions changed again.
This wasn’t the photograph I had driven up to Mount Hood National Forest expecting to make. In fact, it wasn’t even the mountain I had originally been photographing. But that’s often how landscape photography works. You can plan the location, the hike and the composition, but the best photographs often come from simply paying attention to what is happening around you. This brief window of light, smoke and cloud over Mount Jefferson ended up being one of the unexpected highlights of our first evening in Oregon.
