Growing up in Saskatchewan, severe storms were part of life. Every summer, Tornado Alley shifts north to include the Canadian prairies. Living in rural Saskatchewan, I was fascinated by the thunderheads and dramatic skies at the end of a hot summer day. One particular evening, when the sky grew dark, I spotted the Tornado Hunter “Dominator” storm chase vehicle near my parent’s home. That stirred something deep down; storm chasing was something people did.
In my early 30s, nature photography had become a big part of my life. I had photographed storms as they passed through where I had planned to shoot but had never actually storm chased before. But even this minimal experience was enough to stir a love of severe storms, so I set out to understand them. Fast forward to today, and not only do I storm chase most severe storm setups to create timelapse films like the one below, but I lead storm chasing photography tours in Saskatchewan. In 2021, I started photography workshops that provided guests with a comprehensive Canadian prairie photography experience, incorporating landscape photography, night photography, and storm chasing into one unforgettable adventure.
