An intimate landscape image of the power of Takakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park

Power and Beauty – 2024

This past summer, our family ventured on our annual camping trip to the Canadian Rockies, where we were surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. One of the highlights early in the trip was hiking to Laughing Falls, nestled in Yoho Valley in Yoho National Park. The hike was an adventure in itself, with winding trails through dense forests along the side of Yoho River, the sound of the river growing louder as we neared the falls.

When we arrived at Laughing Falls I took out my camera, excited to capture the scene. Laughing Falls is a miniature Takakkaw Falls and I was eager to have another go at my 2021, image Fluid. I experimented with a fast shutter speed, hoping to freeze the movement of the water, but to my surprise, the images didn’t turn out as I’d imagined. While the falls were beautifully sharp and crisp, the photos lacked the dynamic flow and emotion I had witnessed with my own eyes. I just wasn’t able to find the symmetry I was after on these particular falls. The power of the water created a mist that proved to be challenging to shoot in.

Determined to capture the power of nature, we hiked back to the trailhead and continued to Takakkaw Falls, one of the most stunning and powerful waterfalls in the Rockies. The sight of the thundering water cascading down from a height of over 1,200 feet left us in awe. This time, I kept my fast shutter speed but focused more on the base of the falls to allow the viewer a sense of the scale of the falls; the fast shutter speed emphasizing the sheer force and beauty of Takakkaw Falls. The result was far more in line with what I’d envisioned, truly capturing the essence of Takakkaw Falls and its raw power. This trip was more than a photographic journey; it was a reminder of nature’s grandeur and how each moment in the wild is unique, demanding our full attention.
