A landscape photograph of Lake Minnewanka in Banff National park

Drift – 2024

Having made the annual trek to the Canadian Rockies for winter landscape photography for several years, I’m always eager to uncover new perspectives. Because the snow was so bad in many places, it really limited the locations we were willing to put the effort for sunrise shoots to just a handful of spots. After visiting Lake Minnewanka quickly on our first night there, I noted that there was an opportunity on the south side of the lake where we saw visible ice that wasn’t snow-covered. As there are very few photos of this mountain range, we logged it away as a potential location when things looked iffy elsewhere.

We tried out this spot for sunrise in the middle of our trip. The lake was covered in these interesting lines and textures in the surface of the ice, and I found a spot where those textures complimented the mountain range, but the light never cooperated. So I pinned my location and decided that considering our time restraints, we would try and return on our last morning there.

On that last morning, we made it out to our spots but conditions were different. The textures that I had setup two days before in cloudy conditions with no light, were lost in the bright reflections of the sky. Panicked, I started wandering the lake, looking for a place where I could set up something that complimented the mountain range in the distance. By sheer luck, I stumbled across this pattern in the ice that led perfectly to the mountain, ran back to my original spot, grabbed my gear and headed for the new location with enough time to watch the sunrise light play with the clouds and mountain peaks.
