During my recent landscape photography workshop in southern Saskatchewan, one of the highlights was capturing a stunning image of Castle Butte. The day began with a storm chase in the Big Muddy Valley, where we encountered pulse storms that, after a few attempts at organizing, unfortunately fizzled out by late afternoon. With our initial plans for storm photography thwarted, I thought it best to head north to the Avonlea Badlands for a sunset shoot.
On the way, I decided to stop briefly at Castle Butte to show the group that landscape. After this stop, it became clear that this iconic landmark would be the perfect setting for our evening shoot. With cattle running around the Butte, it’s not often you find a great foreground here, even if Castle Butte itself is impressive. The cacti were flowering, the timing couldn’t have been perfect (they were done flowering when I went back a week later with my family). We enjoyed a meal in Coronach before returning as a group to Castle Butte, where we set up for the sunset and later planned to capture some twilight and Milky Way shots.
After getting the group set up with their shots for later, I went off to explore and find some vibrant cacti flowers that provided a unique and beautiful foreground for the iconic Castle Butte backdrop. As the sun approached the horizon, the light broke through the clouds, casting a dramatic, warm glow over the scene. This interplay of light and the blooming cacti created a striking contrast against the rugged formation of Castle Butte.
The resulting photograph captures the essence of that evening perfectly. The Castle Butte stands majestically, illuminated by the golden hues of sunset, with the blooming cacti adding an unexpected splash of colour and texture to the foreground. This image not only highlights the grandeur of Castle Butte but also the beauty of the natural details often overlooked. It was a reminder of the joy of discovering unique perspectives and capturing fleeting moments of beauty in nature.
