August 4th, the first time in a few years I got to chase with Matt Mario (Severe Storm Chasers). The setup for the day wasn’t especially spectacular, but as it was August, you never know which chase will be your last, so we drove west. We planned to sit around Shaunavon and wait for storms to fire. As we got to Swift Current, storms began to go much further west of our target. We both crossed our fingers, hoping we didn’t need to drive all the way to the Alberta side of Cypress Hills to catch a storm.
We waited and watched a supercell on radar drop big time in Alberta, wondering if we needed to abandon our plans and make a run west. However, storms began to develop where we had hoped. We watched new bases come and go, but nothing really established itself. We made the call; we needed to get west. We blasted to Elkwater and set up a timelapse of the growing MCS making its way towards us. The lightning in the storm was terrific, with lots of clear air bolts out in front of the rain. I ran back to the car and got a second body with a telephoto lens on and focused it on this farm and the hills in the distance, hoping I would get lucky. I did.
