When I started my photography journey, I spent a considerable amount of time driving the back roads around my home, looking for old barns or trees to photograph against a sunset or the Milky Way. I came across this scene during those drives and logged it into my head for a future shoot. Because of its location north of Regina, it isn’t a Milky Way location, and it always felt a little far to get to for a quick sunset shoot, so it had gone unphotographed.
In late fall 2024 (October 11), the Aurora Borealis was forecasted to be spectacular one particular night. I was scouring my Google Map locations, looking for something that would be a little more unique for such a special setup, and was reminded of this particular scene. As it faces southeast, I knew it would only work with particularly intense Aurora conditions, and that night was supposed to be special.
As the night began, I was hopeful that the Aurora would have a little more structure to it, rather than being so strong that it just pulsates around the sky. The unique shapes of Aurora could mimic the shape of the river, with the right ingredients. When I saw this scene unfolding before my eyes, I knew I had made the right call.
