There wasn’t a location Andrew Morse and I visited more than Bow Lake during our 2023 trip to the Canadian Rockies. After our first shoot at the Three Sisters, we chose to do some scouting in Kananaskis Country. We were taken aback by how little snow had accumulated in the area. In most areas, there wasn’t enough to cover the underbrush, and in a few spots, the ground was exposed. After some brief discussion, we decided our focus for the rest of the trip needed to be where there was more snow north of Banff along the Icefields Parkway.
The first time we stopped at Bow Lake, we knew the conditions would make for good photos. While there was enough snow to cover the trees, the creek that runs to the lake was still uncovered (it’s usually snow-covered by January). During our first three trips there, we explored different compositions with the light gradually improving with each visit.
On our last full day of the trip, we were on our way to Abraham Lake for sunset and the light had been crazy all day. As we drove down the valley towards Bow Lake the light got so intense we had to stop, throw our snowshoes on, and take advantage. I raced to this spot and captured some of the best light we saw during the trip.
