Whispers of Winter – 2025

Saskatchewan winters can be cold, bleak, and cheerless. We’ll go for a long time with heavy cloud cover between different winter storms. Periods where the sun is shining often coincide with temperatures that might kill you if you’re out too long. The result is that I’ll go several weeks without pulling the camera out of the bag–there is simply nothing to photograph.

That changes every once in a while. Sometimes we get a system that moves in that brings a night, or sometimes a couple of days of freezing fog. This freezing fog results in droplets freezing on many surfaces, leaving the landscape caked in ice crystals, transforming it into a winter wonderland.

We were heading to my parents’ place around Christmas, and when we woke up that morning, the landscape had been completely transformed. I packed my camera, knowing the conditions could be pretty spectacular along the way. That said, I also knew there wasn’t much worth photographing along the highway until we got closer to Weyburn. Still, I held out hope that the conditions would hold until we reached a little creek that runs beside the road, lined with scattered trees. I’ve always thought that in the right light and atmosphere, that area had real potential—and that morning delivered the most amazing conditions I could have hoped for. It was one of those rare moments where everything aligned perfectly.
