A storm photograph of an EF-2 tornado near Frobisher, Saskatchewan on June 19, 2025

Twister – 2025

June 19th was looking like it could be pretty dynamic on the weather models a couple of days before the event. I’m self-employed, which gives me the flexibility to storm chase when the setup is right, but it also means that I need to ensure projects are in a good place before taking off for a chase. I worked to ensure I could chase on the 19th as it looked like it could be a great first chase of the season.

The storms fired early that afternoon. Herry and I were chasing together and found ourselves just north of two storm cells that were battling each other for the best environment. In 99% of these situations, it’s the south cell that wins the battle; this time was no different. The cells completed their split. The north cell veered off to the north, dying quickly, while the south storm began turning right, right into great tornado environment.
Herry and I got ourselves into position for a timelapse and watched as the storm began to build a wall cloud.

We repositioned and saw a big RFD cut begin; this storm was really close to producing a tornado. A few minutes later, we saw ground rotation and a funnel not yet fully condensed. Our first tornado of the year and the first in a couple of years. It felt great to get on the board, even if it was just a quick spin-up. A few moments later, more ground circulation out of a different funnel: a second tornado, this one dying as quickly as the first.

Then, another few moments later, the storm decided to give us the most beautiful tornado I’ve ever been in front of. A big funnel formed directly over our heads. We watched as a fully condensed tornado took shape right in front of us. A strong EF-2 moved towards us while Herry and I timelapsed. Until that moment, I had no idea I needed a close-range tornado intercept in my life. This shot is super wide @ 15mm; the tornado only a 1/2 mile away. The inflow winds were intense; we could hear the roar of the tornado. Definitely a memorable moment.
