Saskatchewan winters can be cold, bleak, and cheerless. We often go for long stretches under heavy cloud cover between winter storms. When the sun does come out, it’s usually paired with temperatures so cold they could kill you if you’re out too long. As a result, I can go weeks without pulling the camera out of the bag—there’s simply nothing to photograph.
But every once in a while, things change. Sometimes, a weather system moves in and brings a night—or even a couple of days—of freezing fog. This fog leaves droplets that freeze on contact, coating the landscape in ice crystals and transforming it into a winter wonderland. The longer the fog lingers, the thicker the rime ice becomes. It’s not common, but now and then, a system stalls, and we get fog on and off for several days. When that happens, the trees grow heavy with ice, and Saskatchewan begins to resemble a scene from northern Quebec or Alaska.
It’s during times like these that I’m reminded why I love living here. I make it a priority to get out and experience these rare conditions. On this particular day, I was only a few miles from home, parked along a dirt road, watching the fog and light take turns dancing across the landscape.
