The fall of 2025 was a busy season, just not particularly for photography. Between other commitments and unpredictable weather, a lot of good opportunities came and went. In the end, I only managed to get out three times: one trip to the Canadian Rockies and two outings in local woodlands.
Ironically, those short local outings ended up producing some of the most interesting conditions I’ve ever seen close to home. On one of those mornings at White Butte Trails, freezing fog rolled in overnight. By the time I arrived, everything was coated in frost. Branches were outlined in white, and the fallen leaves on the forest floor were edged with tiny frozen droplets.
What surprised me most was that many of the leaves were still clinging to the branches. Late in the season like that, most of them had already fallen, but a few patches remained. The freezing fog coated them as well, turning ordinary leaves into delicate shapes rimmed with ice.
The best part was that the conditions held for hours. Usually, frost like that disappears quickly once the sun comes up, but the fog kept everything cold and preserved the scene. It gave me plenty of time to slow down, explore the trails, and work on different compositions without feeling rushed.
This image from White Butte Trails came from that morning. What started as a relatively quiet photography season ended up including one of the most memorable local conditions I’ve had the chance to photograph, and I walked away with a couple of portfolio images from that outing alone.
